In 2019, we conducted an ecological and ornithological survey of Nikolaevsk-on-Amur Airport (Khabarovskiy Krai) and the surrounding area. As a result, an ornithological problem requiring an immediate solution was identified: the presence of a large mixed colony (787 nests) of Great Cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) and Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) near the eastern end of the runway. The colony was located approximately 200 meters from the airport's eastern glide path, with birds periodically crossing aircraft pathways. Given the high risk of aircraft collisions with large birds, an urgent solution was needed. During the 2019/2020, 2020/2021 non-breeding seasons, the trees that served as nesting grounds were cut down. In subsequent years, the cormorants and herons established a new colony approximately 750 meters south of the airport on a slope facing the Amur River. Their feeding trajectory was away from the glide path of airport aircraft. Monitoring the bird population in the new colony and their response to disturbance by people and bears (Ursus arctos) is necessary.
