The abundance and distribution of the Oriental Stork Ciconia boyciana in Primorsky Krai

In 2025, a census of the Oriental Stork was conducted throughout Primorsky Krai. A total of 482 inhabited nests were counted, of which 301 nests were in the Prikhankayskaya Lowland, 123 on the right bank of the Sungacha River, 34 in the Ussuri River valley, 7 in the lower reaches of the Bolshaya Ussurka River, 3 in the lower reaches of the Bikin River, 8 in the Razdolnaya River valley, and 6 in the Arsenyevka River valley. The number of nests located on power line supports has increased by 7.3 times since 2018 and amounted to 146 nests. Continued densification of nesting sites (up to 10 m between adjacent nests) and the formation of colonies in places with a sufficient number of suitable nesting trees and a food supply were noted. There is an increase in the proportion of low-lying stork nests (from 4 to 8 meters), as well as the prevalence of willow and aspen among the tree species used for nest construction.
