Based on identification of collection materials of dipteran insects of the family Ephydridae, the species Coenia deserta Krivosheina, 2001 was discovered for the first time in Russia and Armenia. Diptera of this genus are typical of the coastal zone of freshwater bodies, where adults and larvae feed on detritus and microscopic algae. The species was described from Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan. Specimens we studied were collected in Bashkortostan (Muldashevo) and Armenia (Markara). This work provides images of body and genital structure, as well as diagnostic characters that distinguish C. deserta from related species. A key to Coenia species in Russia has been compiled.
